福爾摩斯緊接對離開的老太太進行了跟蹤，但這位神秘人物卻在坐出租馬車的中途人間蒸發了。困擾之時，一群流浪小孩卻找上門來，原來這居然是福爾摩斯的偵探小分隊。同時，格雷格森探員卻突然宣稱自己已經將兇手繩之以法了，那么他是怎么“偵破”這起案件的呢？

“Ah, I’ll tell you all about it.
The first difficulty which we had to struggle with was finding out this American’s previous history.
Some people would have waited until their advertisements(告示) were answered, or until someone came forward and gave information.

“Yes,” said Holmes, “by John Underwood and Sons, 129, Camberwell Road.”
“I had no idea that you noticed that,” Gregson said, looking quite upset.
“Have you been there?”
“No.”
“Ha!” cried Gregson, in a relieved voice, “you should never neglect(忽略) a chance, however small it may seem.”
