人類和大地，有著密不可分的關系。在一定程度上，我們可以說大地是人類生命的基礎。
因此，在英語中，“ground”也可以表示“基礎”。我們來看一個來自《經濟學人》（The Economist）雜志中的例子：
Politicians, for the most part, have refused to raise taxes on fossil fuels in recent years, on the grounds that making driving or heating homes more expensive would not only annoy voters but also hurt the economy.
句中，“on the grounds”自然不是“在地上”的意思。上面說過，“ground”可以表示“基礎”。因此，“on the grounds”的意思就是“基于，由于，因為”，相當于“because”，當然也可以解釋為“be based on; on account of”。

想要創業成功，確實需要“腳踏實地”，但同時，我們也要“keep one's ear to the ground”。
與“雙腳走在地面”相比，“雙耳貼在地面”可能更少見。但是對于一百五十多年前的美國拓荒者來說，這個動作相當重要。
當時，美國到西部開荒的人從當地印第安人那里學到了一個訣竅，那就是把耳朵貼在地上。這樣，拓荒者們就可以聽到幾英里以外馬匹或野牛奔跑的聲音。這對拓荒者來說是非常重要的，因為他們聽到的聲音可能是印第安人騎著馬來攻打他們的聲音，也可能是幾千頭受驚的野牛正向他們奔馳而來。如果躲避不及時，他們可能會死傷慘重。
如今，印第安人和野牛的威脅已不復存在。但是，把耳朵貼在地上這個訣竅已經成為了一個習慣用語，也就是“keep one's ear to the ground”。
從上面那個故事，我們應該可以猜到“keep one's ear to the ground”是什么意思。的確，它表示“保持高度警惕”或“集中注意力”，用英文解釋就是“to devote attention to watching or listening for clues as to what is going to happen”。
例如，一個想要取得成功的企業家，可能會經常對他的下屬說：You should keep your ear to the ground so that you’d be the first to know of a new idea.
