在《小詞大用》第十四期中我們曾提到，gold是世界上最值錢的東西之一。今天，我們來講講另外一個也很值錢的東西：silver。
“silver”的意思是“銀”。大家想象一下，在你們面前突然出現了一排（line）的銀子（silver），是不是會感覺人生充滿了希望了呢？
沒錯！在英語中，有一個習慣用語叫作“silver lining”，意思就是“不幸或失望中的一線希望”。不過必須指出的是，它的起源和中國的銀子沒有任何關系。事實上，它來自于一句西方諺語：Every cloud has a silver lining，意思是每片烏云都有銀色的襯里，也可以理解為黑暗中總有一線光明，或是天無絕人之路。
因此，“silver lining”如果用英文解釋就是“a hopeful or comforting prospect in the midst of difficulty”。
我們來看一個來自《讀者文摘》（Reader's Digest）的例子：
It helps to be particularly attuned to the silver lining that your partner sees in a really dark time.
這句話的大意是：這有助于你更好地體會伴侶在黑暗中看到的一線希望。
接下來，我們來看一些“silver”和“嘴”搭配的習慣用語：
在歐洲，有一個舊傳統，富有人家替嬰兒舉辦命名禮的時候，會把當時象征著富貴的銀制湯匙給嬰兒。由于嬰兒大都喜歡將手里的東西放到嘴里，因此嘴里咬著湯匙的嬰兒，就會被人認為是出生于富貴家庭。
這一傳統帶來了一個習慣用語：be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth。它的意思就是“出生于有錢人家”，即“be born into a wealthy family”。
我們來看一個例句：
We may both be wealthy now, but I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth.
也就是說，I had nothing when I was young, and all of my fortune is down to my own hard work.
當然，真正的財富，其實不是嘴里咬著銀制的湯匙，而是嘴里長著銀色的舌頭。為什么這么說呢？因為在英語中，“silver tongue”指的是“口才；巧舌如簧”，也就是我們常說的“三寸不爛之舌”。用英文解釋就是“oratory skills that are particularly eloquent, artful, seductive, and/or persuasive”。
例如，He might not have much experience in politics, but his silver tongue is bound to win over a great deal of voters.
是的，擁有滔滔不絕的口才的確是一筆財富。然而有時候，沉默卻更值錢。漢語里，人們常說“沉默是金”，而英語把這種說法又加強了一些：speech is silver, silence is gold。直譯過來就是：雄辯是銀，沉默是金。如果用英文解釋，就是“an expression that values silence over speech”。
舉一個例子，如果一個人什么話都和記者說，那么你就可以這樣告誡他：I would be careful around all those reporters if I were you. Remember: speech is silver, silence is gold.
