PART 1 Vocabulary
1.bear
Also bear in mind, when you're choosing words anf stringing them together, how they sound. This may seem absurd:readers read with their eye.
bear=bring in
be a bear for 對…
2.curry (sb's)favor
Mencken was never timid or evasive;he didn't kowtow to the reader or curry anyone's favor.
curry (sb's)favor=seek favor by fawning or flattery
e.g.:This employee is currying favor with his superordinates
3. self-righteous
It may seen a miracle that Mencken could get away with such heresies in the 1920s,when hero worship was an American religion and the self-righteous wrath of the Bible Belt oozed from coast to coast.
self-righteous person thinks they can do no wrong, and goes about with a "holier-than-thou" attitude, judging and scrutinizing everyone else.
PART 2 Note
I 'm talking about two different issues. One is craft, the other is attitude. The first is a question of mastering a precise skill. The second is a question of how you use that skill to express your personality.
Think of the other as a creative act:the expressing of who you are.Relax and say what you want to say.And since style is who you are,you only need to be ture to yourself to find it gradually emerging from under the accumulated clutter and debris, growing more distinctive every day.
Make a habit of reading what is being written today and what was written by earlier masters.Writing is learned by imitation.
Also bear in mind, when you are choosing words and stringing them together, how they sound. This may seem absurd:readers read with their eyes. But in fact they hear what they arr reading far more than you realize. Therefore such matters as rhythm and alliteration are vital to every sentence.
