從字面上理解，“pull out”這個習慣用語指的是“拉出；拔出”的意思。事實上，它的引申義也和這個有關。如果用英語解釋，“pull out”的意思是“to withdraw from something; to leave a place; to stop being involved in something”，其實就是指“退出，離開，放棄”。
在2014年6月《美國國家地理雜志》（National Geographic）中，有一篇關于越戰時期美軍偵查犬的文章。在這篇文章中有這樣一句話：
In Vietnam an estimated 4,000 canines were used to lead jungle patrols, saving numerous lives. Nevertheless, the military decided to leave many behind when the U.S. pulled out.
句中，“pull out”就表示“撤離；撤軍”。因此，這個句子可以翻譯為：在越南，大約4000只狗被用作叢林偵察，它們拯救過無數的生命。但是，美軍在撤離時卻決定把它們留下。
除了和不同介詞搭配之外，“pull”這個詞還經常和人們身上的不同部位組成習慣用語。讓我們從“頭”說起。
人們在焦慮或煩躁的時候，可能會抓耳撓腮，有時急得恨不得把頭發都拔下來。英語中，就有“pull one's hair out”的說法，指的是“extremely anxious, worried, frustrated, or stressed out about something”。
我們來看一個例句：
We've been pulling our hair out trying to figure out what's causing the server outages.
從這個例句中我們可以知道，“pull one's hair out”后面的動詞必須是“ing”形式的。
漢語中，我們常說“著手做某事”，英語中也有類似的表達。當我們催促某人不要拖延，趕緊開始做某事時，我們就可以用“pull one's finger out”這個習慣用語。在英文中，它的意思是“to cease stalling or procrastinating and do something soon or at once”。
例如，I wish Mary would pull her finger out about choosing the florist she wants for the wedding.
“拉某人的手”，是要讓他行動起來。但如果是“拉某人的腿”，又表示什么意思呢？
事實上，“pull one's leg”指的是“to kid, fool, or trick someone”，即“開玩笑”。
例如，Don't believe him. He's just pulling your leg.
