今天上課時，一個學生說他在美劇《好漢兩個半》（Two And A Half Men）中看到了一個表達，令他十分費解。這個表達是：until you have more chins than Chinese phone book。這個學生說，當時看到字幕的翻譯是“一直到你胖得不能再胖為止”。他說完全無法理解為什么這樣翻譯。
的確，一看到“have more chins than a Chinese phone book”這種說法，很多人可能都會不知所云。“chin”是“下巴”，“Chinese phone book”就是“中國電話簿”。可是，二者究竟有什么關系呢？
在英語中，“have more chins than a Chinese phone book”是一個習慣用語，意思就是“極度肥胖的”。肥胖的人可能會有“雙下巴”（double chin），因此這個習慣用語中有“chin”一詞不難讓人理解。但是，為什么要用“中國電話簿”來形容“肥胖”呢？
事實上，大家有沒有覺得“chin”的發音有點像中國的“陳”這個姓？沒錯！可能大多數外國人認為中國姓“陳”的人最多，因此在電話簿中占的頁數應該也是最多的。于是，“比中國電話簿中陳姓占的頁數好多”就被用來形容數量非常多，再加上“more chins”也可以表示“下巴贅肉很多”，“have more chins than a Chinese phone book”就引申為“極度肥胖的”。
我們來看一下它的英文解釋：To be exceptionally or exceedingly fat, having multiple rolls of fat (chins) on one's neck. Used as a humorous insult, the phrase is a pun on the word chin and the supposed commonness of "Chin" as a Chinese surname.
例如，Your brother is so fat, she has more chins than a Chinese phone book.
接下來，我們再來看一些和“chin”有關的習慣用語。
在雜志《新聞周刊》（Newsweek）的一篇文章中，有這樣一句話：
We really took it on the chin. I mean, this was such an unpopular thing for us to say. And it does not feel good in any way, shape or form to have been absolutely right.
句中的“take it on the chin”究竟想要表達什么呢？查閱詞典之后，發現它的意思是“to receive the full brunt of something; to suffer defeat or fail completely; to endure suffering or punishment”，即“泰然處之；完全失敗；忍受痛苦或責罰”。
在上面那句中，我覺得“take it on the chin”更多指的是“完全失敗”，因此，我們可以這樣理解這句話：我們真的有種挫敗感。我的意思是，很少人會說這種事情。任何一種形式的完全正確都讓人有種不好的感覺。
“下巴”被重重地打了一下，的確非常“痛苦”，讓人有種“挫敗感”。但是，有些人盡管經歷了磨難，卻依舊不肯低頭。從這種人口中，我們可能會經常聽到類似“chin up”這樣的鼓勵。
“chin up”的意思比較好理解，就是“振作起來”，即“a phrase that encourages one to improve one's mood, especially when sad or discouraged”。
例如，對一個心情不好的朋友，我們可以這么對他說：Chin up, tomorrow is another day。
這樣看來，我們可以把“chin up”理解為“昂首挺胸”。當然，我們也可以把“chin up”改成“keep your chin up”來鼓勵他人。
“chin”在習慣用語中，幾乎都保留了其“下巴”的意思，包括“make chin music”，意思是“說話”或“嘮叨”，“to talk or chatter”。
大家可能會覺得奇怪——“下巴”和“音樂”為什么能表示“說話”呢？
對此，我的理解是這樣的：“下巴”可以指代“嘴”，“music”和“dance”類似。于是，“make chin music”就相當于“嘴巴在跳舞”，也就是“滔滔不絕地說話”。
例如，We sat around all evening making chin music.
同時，對于一個愛嘮叨的人，我們可以這么對他說：You were making chin music when you should have been listening.
