Chris de Burgh的第二張專輯《The Spanish Train And Other Stories》是他的成名之作，也是他最重要最有代表性的作品。對本編來說，這是一盤承載了太多個人記憶的磁帶。第一次聽到專輯是1994年冬，寒冷的南京冬夜，縮在被窩里，周圍一片寂靜，只有耳機里傳來忽深情、忽傷感、忽詭異、忽憤怒、忽瘋癲的歌聲，十首歌、十個故事，引領我進入奇幻之境……

回到專輯發行的1975年，當時的愛爾蘭與英國民族紛爭劇烈，時局不安，抗議示威此起彼伏，恐怖事件時有發生，整個社會籠罩著不詳的陰影。20多歲的Chris de Burgh用灰暗的眸子打量著歷史與現實，思考著宗教、戰爭與人生的終極問題，困惑與沖突在心頭洶涌，這沖突讓他籍歌聲渲泄而出。

【第四首《Patricia the Stripper》是喧鬧的酒吧爵士風格，Chris de Burgh以夸張的腔調嘲諷著世像：帕翠夏是城里最棒的脫衣舞女，她自稱“上帝造她為罪人，是為了讓胖人變瘦，并紛紛匍匐在她裙下”。周六晚上，嘈雜的酒館里，帕翠夏正在表演，臺下掌聲雷動，當最后一片衣物從她身上落下時，警察敲門了。帕翠夏被逮捕，人們都以為牢獄之災是免不了的，可就在法庭上，戲劇性的一幕出現了，法官敲了敲桌子：“撤案撤案，這女孩明明穿著工作制服嘛！”于是又一場表演開始，臺下繼續掌聲雷動，當最后一片衣物落下時，警察們居然……歡呼再來一次！】

【第五首《A Spaceman Came Travelling》是Chris de Burgh最廣為人知的作品之一，流暢美妙的旋律使人一見鐘情，此歌光在港臺就被許冠杰、邰正宵等翻唱過。齊秦曾翻唱為《直到世界末日》，也廣受好評，作詞人楊立德在創作時借用了原詞的意像。原詞是以科幻的框架，講述耶穌誕生的故事，寄托人類對和平的祈愿。樂曲編配極富想象力，電子合成器迷離空幻，吉他點綴恰到好處，當合唱響起，展現出空曠通透的音場，仿佛能窺見阿瑟·克拉克小說式的奇幻景象?！?/p>

【第七首《The Painter畫師》有《Patricia the Stripper脫衣舞女帕翠夏》相似的黑色氣氛，但情節詭異陰森，叮叮當當的怪異敲打讓人聯系起Tom Waits。丈夫應妻子的要求，找了一名畫師為她畫肖像，畫師勾引妻子，丈夫發怒，妻子跑了，后來丈夫聽說妻子死了，掛在那里一星期都沒人理……】

09. The Tower 塔

【第九首《The Tower塔》的題材可能取材自童話或傳說。以優美的民謠小調，講述一個類似“國王與小鳥”的故事：殘暴的大領主打獵時射傷一只小鳥，小鳥化身為美女，讓領主一見鐘情，但美女對領主的許諾毫無興趣，領主只好將她囚于塔中。某日，美女重化小鳥飛走，領主痛不欲生，每天徘徊于塔之上痛哭。美麗與獸性，殘暴與柔弱，權力與壓迫，交織成奇詭的圖景?！?/p>

A great lord came walking through the forest
一天早晨，大領主走進森林
one morning with a weapon in his hand;
手中握著武器
Rich was his castle, he lacked for nothing,
城堡是他的財富，他擁有一切
but killing was his plan;
但殺戮是他的寄望
When a white bird flew by she fell from the sky,

【終曲《Just Another Poor Boy》同樣以圣經故事為原型，耶穌化身為流浪青年，瑪麗成為夜晚的女郎。寒冷的冬夜，她見他躺在路上，她把他收留，當他夢中哭喊時她擁抱著他，安慰他渡過長夜……他傳播愛與道義，于是越來越多的人聚集在他旁邊，有天士兵把他帶走，罪名是傳播謊言與憎恨，威脅國家安全，他被吊死在山上……曲終，鋼琴聲、號角聲逐漸熄滅，飄搖不定的節奏像汪洋中的小舟，唯有一聲聲“Oh my Lord...Oh my Lord...Oh my Lord...”回蕩于天地間。】
