Ithaka

As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope the voyage is a long one.
May there be many a summer morning when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

伊薩卡

當你啟程前往伊薩卡
但愿你的道路漫長，
充滿奇跡，充滿發現。
萊斯特律戈涅斯巨人，獨眼巨人，
憤怒的波塞冬海神——不要怕他們：
你將不會在途中碰到諸如此類的怪物，
只要你高揚你的思想，
只要有一種特殊的感覺，
接觸你的精神和肉體。

讓伊薩卡常在你心中，
抵達那里是你此行的目的。
但路上不要過于匆促，
最好多延長幾年，
那時當你上得了島你也就老了，
一路所得已經教你富甲四方，
用不著伊薩卡來讓你財源滾滾。

是伊薩卡賦予你如此神奇的旅行，
沒有它你可不會啟程前來。
現在它再也沒有什么可以給你的了。

而如果你發現它原來是這么窮，
那可不是伊薩卡想愚弄你。
既然那時你已經變得很聰慧，并且見多識廣，
你也就不會不明白，這些伊薩卡意味著什么。

這是我最敬愛的美國教授在畢業紀念冊上贈予我們的一首詩，作者是希臘的詩人卡瓦菲斯。讀了之后，足以讓所有追夢路上的人釋然許多，也讓人非常感動。

Ithaka是希臘的一個小島，據說是荷馬史詩中英雄奧德賽的故鄉。在卡瓦菲斯的詩中，伊薩卡是個象征，象征美好追求的終點，是每個人都想到達的地方。通俗地說，你的伊薩卡可以是成為一個事業有成的商人，或是在學術上取得驚人的成就。

然而這條通往我們夢想的道路會是艱辛漫長的，意想不到的挫折接踵而至，常讓我們垂頭喪氣，不知道繼續走下去是否還有意義。

卡瓦菲斯勸你不要放棄，一定要往下走，一路上也請留意身邊的風景，收獲不同的經歷。

或許在多年之后，等我們終于到達Ithaka的時候，才會猛然發現，原來我們一路追求的終點也不過如此。真正重要的竟然是這一路上看到的風光和遇到的人。

卡瓦菲斯告訴我們，盡管我們的理想似乎很遙遠、要付出很多努力才能達到，我們都應該珍視追尋的過程。

人生有那么多次選擇的機會，并沒有哪個選擇會讓你萬劫不復。不要害怕因為哪一關的“失誤”浪費時間，而是要不急不迫，從容地去走這一段路。在這個過程里我們或許就已經收獲到我們真正想要的東西了。更何況在這個追尋夢想的旅途中，我們可以和愛的人彼此陪伴，一起經歷許多美好有趣的故事呢！
