Being a woman, a scientist as well as an Ossi, Merkel is a triple anomaly among German leaders. Her family moved across the frontier of the postwar division of German in 1954, just a few weeks after young Angela Kasner(her maiden name) was born. Her father served in a church whose chariry base sheltered several hundred physically and mentally disabled people. This experience taught Merkel a lesson of how to treat handicapped people in a normal way.

Merkel described herself as a person of relatively sunny spirit, no matter how difficult a situation she was facing, confronted with hard physical setting and refused by the local community, for instance.

Though physically clumsy, Merkel was a brilliant, ferociously motivated student who was a success in education and later graduated with a doctorate in chemistry. It was during this period that Merkel joined in the Free German Youth party where she bacame very critical toward Germany and made a new way towards her political career.
