PART 1: Thoughts
The deliberate-practice mindset offers a very different view: anyone can improve, but it requires the right approach. If you are not improving, it’s not because you lack innate talent; it’s because you’re not practicing the right way. Once you understand this, improvement becomes a matter of figuring out what the “right way” is.
One benefit of “l(fā)earning while real work gets done” is that it gets people into the habit of practicing and thinking about practicing.
PART 2: Summary
? ? The author holds that the way to enhancing performance in an organization requires recognizing and rejecting three prevailing myths: one’s abilities are limited, you’re bound to get better by doing long enough time, you’ll get better if you just try hard enough. In essence, the case of pilots and radiologists offers the deliberate-practice mindset: anyone can improve, but it requires the right approach. Meanwhile, feedback is a pretty good recipe for training. In a nutshell, we could adopt the approach of“l(fā)earning while real work gets done”, constantly practicing and otherwise seeking ways to hone our skills.
