寫在前面：
Hi，我會不定期在這里放一些句子，也暫時不打算新開文章，等實在太多了再新開。中文句子（譯文）放在前面，請你思考如何用英文表達，再看下面的原句。沒有和原句用一樣的詞并不代表你一定不好，主要是學習思路。我的公眾號內也可以找到相關內容，有興趣請關注。這里的句子基本上來源于The Economist, The Atlantic, TIME等水準較高、有參考價值的雜志。譯文大部分為筆者所譯，部分來自詞典和網絡，歡迎指正。
譯文：從一月起，保險業收購已達一千億美元，日本企業在保險業并購活動的狂潮中大出風頭/起到了重要作用。
原文：Japanese firms have featured prominently in a wave of merger activity in the insurance industry, which has seen $100 billion in acquisitions since January.
解說：feature v.起到重要作用（哈哈哈，終于可以替換to play an important part in…了?。?b>。...has seen, has witness都可以來表示發生了某事，以“擬人”的方式讓句子更為生動。注意中文和英文的語序安排。
譯文：領導們方才意識到這場政變對任何人來說都是一場災難。
原文：The leaders realized belatedly that the coup would be disastrous for everyone.
譯文：其一是道德良知，時至今日才被敘利亞孩童浮尸土耳其海灘的照片喚醒。
原文：One is moral conscience, belatedly wakened by the image of a drowned Syrian child on a Turkish beach.
解說：belated adj. A belated action happens later than it should have done.這個詞比較正式，經常用在政治場合，表示某事早該發生，但發生得比預期晚得太多。此處用了副詞形式，意思相同。如果單獨表達“moral conscience belatedly wakened”，也可以譯為“沉睡已久的道德良知終于被喚醒”。
譯文：這樣的（難民）數量難免會引發許多擔憂：（歐洲）文化將深陷異國文化，各個經濟體將背上過重的負擔，社會福利不得不受到限制，甚至會有恐怖主義者趁機混入。
原文：Such numbers will inevitably raise many worries: that cultures will be swamped by aliens, economies will be overburdened, social benefits will have to be curbed and even that terrorists will creep in.
解說：經濟學人用了swamp, overburden, curb, creep in四個非常形象的動詞，表達了社會多方面受到影響的混亂局面，體現了對未來的擔憂。raise worries引發擔憂。另外注意，worries冒號后面跟的是四個that從句，第一個到第三個用了一個that，最后一個在and后，所以又用了一個that，保持前后句式一致。這里that引導的是名詞性從句，和前面的worries這個名詞相對應。如果去掉that，語言的精密和準確度就會打折。
名詞性從句舉例：Word came that another new research center would soon be set up.
譯文：身處大片貧窮而混亂的地區之中，富裕而和平的歐洲對于許多尋求更好生活的人而言，具有強大的吸引力。
原文：As a wealthy and peaceful continent surrounded by large areas of poverty and chaos, Europe is a strong draw for many seeking a better life.
解說：draw指有吸引力的事物，作為動詞是“拉”“吸引”的意思。
例：He just wants to draw attention to the plight of the unemployed.
他僅僅是想引起人們對失業者困境的關注。
表示吸引的詞還有appeal, intrigue, seduce, allure等。短小的詞比大詞用起來更有力，更到位。不要忽視常見小詞多義的學習。
譯文：受到巨大壓力的聯合國（相關）機構，必須得到充裕的資金支持。
原文：UN agencies, buckling under the strain, must be properly funded.
解說：buckle v.變形、彎折。buckle under the strain: to bend under pressure.
例：Mcanally's knees buckled and he crumpled down onto the floor...
麥卡納利雙膝發軟，癱倒在地板上。
buckle up 系好安全帶，口語中引申為“做好準備”。
譯文：移民是社會財富的凈貢獻者。他們為經濟發展注入活力。可以說，移民就是“積極主動”的化身。
原文：Migrants are net contributors to the public purse. They inject economic dynamism. They are, almost by definition, self-starters.
解說：根據研究，和本國國民相比，移民交稅更多，獲取的福利更少，因此移民的付出大于回報，所以稱為net contributors。purse，錢包。public purse公共的錢包就是“國庫”了。形容人或物是...by definition，按照定義就是這樣的，說明這個人/物簡直就是...的化身。還可以用epitome這個詞：The Dorchester Hotel is the epitome of luxury in the heart of London.多切斯特酒店是倫敦市中心豪華奢侈的縮影。
另外，請看原文是3個完整獨立的句子。寫作不可一味追求長句。此處用3個短句更加突出了移民為社會帶來的貢獻，作者的贊賞之情溢于言表。如果把句子變為：
Migrants are net contributors to the public purse who inject economic dynamism and are almost by definition, self-starters.
請自行體會。
譯文：“基督教世界”的古老想法依然潛伏在現代歐洲社會。
原文：An old idea of Christendom still lurks within modern European identity.
解說：歐洲的選民擔心移民（異教徒）無法融入他們的“基督教世界（Christendom）”。歐洲依然是以基督教為主的社會，而這里所說的移民多為穆斯林。
lurk潛伏
看到lurk這個詞，不由得想到親愛的邁Thriller第一段：
It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark
Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes
You're paralyzed
譯文：當然，每個社會可以接收的移民都是有限的。但歐洲計劃接收的移民數量并未超出其承受能力。
原文：There are surely limits to how many migrants any society will accept. But the numbers Europe proposes to receive do not begin to breach them.
解說：breach If some one or something breaches a barrier, they make an opening in it, usually leaving it weakened or destroyed.
此處的breach相當于“超出”的意思，下次看到“超出”，除了surpass, exceed, over, beyond這些詞，可以試試用一下breach。
a breach of confidence/trust ? ? 泄密；背信
譯文：（今年）六月，最高法院宣布同性婚姻在全美范圍合法，該法律生效后，一些地方官員停止向任何申請者發放結婚證明，不論是同性戀還是異性戀，這些官員中就包括羅恩縣職員戴維斯女士。
原文：After the Supreme Court in effect legalised same-sex marriage throughout the country in June, several local officials—among them Ms Davis, the clerk of Rowan County, Kentucky—stopped supplying marriage licences to any couples, gay or straight.
解說：1. Legalise，合法化，如果后面加一個很長的賓語就不太符合漢語習慣，因此翻譯時可以加上“宣布”一類的詞，讓句子讀起來更順。通常以-ise, -ize結尾的詞表示“使…”或“…化”，例如jeopardize，standardize，但注意盡量不要生造詞。政府工作報告一類文體中有很多“…化”的表達，不可隨意一味變成“-ise/-ize”，要根據語境和背后真正要表達的意思來考慮。
2. 需要注意破折號的用法。如果不用破折號，原句就會變為several local officials stopped supplying marriage licences to any couples, gay or straight，但是此處的Ms Davis往哪里放呢？不能直接在后面加上including Ms Davis吧？所以我們在寫作的過程中也可以使用破折號，among them和several local officials連接緊密，用破折號也有突出內容的效果。
3.注意marriage licence。[美式拼寫：license]一般來說，美國的marriage licence指允許婚姻進行的文件，而婚禮完畢后會政府官員會給新人頒發marriage certificate，是證明婚禮已經舉行的官方記錄。但每個轄區政策不同，有些地方只需要marriage licence就可以起到上述雙重作用。
由此，A licence is an official document which gives you permission to do, use, or own something. 即licence是一種許可你做某事的官方文件，例如driving licence駕駛執照，import licence進口許可證，business licence營業執照。
而A certificate is an official document stating that particular facts are true.偏重于證明某件事屬實，例如birth certificate出生證明（這么看來，birth licence應該是“準生證”了？）death certificate死亡證明，graduate certificate畢業證。
