【Walden-Henry D. Thoreau】First impression of the writer

I have recently decided to force myself to read English books. When I don't feel like reading English, it means my English is getting worse.

Actually, I have just finished the preface from which I got a first impression of the writer..

To be honest, I cannot quit understand in his way of his writing, with a lot of sutle decription and comparisons. Moreover, it is in English..

I can see from the lines that Thereau tried to be different from his townsmen whose misfortune,he said, is that they have inherited farms, houses, barns, cattle, which he thought are more easily acquired than got rid of. From it I guess he doesn't want to be a farmer, like his neighbors, living in such a small world, that's why he lived in the woods. He compared their tilling land to digging graves since they were born. I nearly laughed when irread this. What if his neighbors read his book and see how he described them....?Maybe he firmly thought that his neighbors would never read a book to get a clearer sight of the world.

He also talked about slavery but he said the worst is the slave-driver of yourself. This madw me think of modern people, most of them are slaves as well as slave-drivers of themselves..but the worst is that we are not conscious of it....
