Why we shouldn’t have homework

I believe that there should no longer be any homework in school because it is proven that homework creates health problems that strongly affect students' mental and physical health.

In a study by Stanford University, they asked students to open response questions about the health consequences of homework. Many students said that long hours of homework lead to sleep deprivation, stress, weight loss, change in diet, headaches and stomachaches. Along with the physical aspects, homework can affect the mental health of a student; changing the unique way each person interprets a problem, forcing them to see the world through a narrow pipe instead of open eyes. From the same study at Stanford University, many students agreed that while family and socialising were important, upon consideration between grades and social life, they would rather stay inside and do homework then hang out with friends.

Stress and sleep deprivation aren't what young children are supposed to be exposed to at such a young age where their bodies and minds are still developing. These symptoms of homework were also not what teachers intended to put on these students, making it an intrinsic property of homework. The demoralising fact that students would sacrifice precious time with their loved ones for a better grade shows us that homework also largely influences the way we think and organise our true priorities. Homework affects physical and mental health, and damage the creative roots of a developing child.

Furthermore, I also believe that there shouldn't be homework because it takes up valuable time that could be used to do more important activities that build skills in other areas of life.

Homework focuses on a specific area of life that for most people don't apply to them in the future. Instead of slaving away at questions, students could be on the basketball court socialising with friends, building their social skills and confidence.? Instead of slaving away at questions, students could be at robotics competitions where only if they work as a group and fail and learn, will they achieve success. Instead of slaving away at questions, students could be spending more time precious with their families, talking, laughing and discussing things away from school life. Homework can't do any of that.

Supporting this idea, take a look at today's society, where the worlds richest and most successful people, people who can change the world have not been known to spend hours on homework (or endorse it), but rather pursue their interests and having the confidence to do what they want to do. Not only does homework destroy the time with family, the growth of skills in other areas and confidently socialising with people, but it also constricts the possibility and prevents students believe that they can be the future world changers.

Summarising these arguments, homework is a limiting factor in schools that also hugely affect students' wellbeing, attitude, ability to interpret problems and unique thinking style. If homework was removed from schools, the society would see a wider spectrum of skill sets, fostering the development of the country in all areas. The country would see more confident people in the jobs they do, boosting the efficiency and lowering the stress. The country would see a lower suicide rate for children who can't keep up with classes. Remove homework from schools and remove all feelings of failure and incapability.
