In 1963, a Lancaster bomber crashed on Wallis Island, a remote place in the South
Pacific, a long way west of Samoa. The plane crash wasn't too serious so that the
wreck wasn't too badly damaged. Over the years, the crash was forgotten. It was then
in 1989 that the plane was accidentally rediscovered in an aerial survey of the island.
The French authorities had the plane packaged and moved in parts back to Frence
because the plane was worth rescuing. A group of enthusiasts will need to repair the
three Rolls-Royce Merlin engines as the rest one was still in perfect condition. To their
surprise, they will find that a colony of bees had turned the fourth engine into a hive
and it was totally preserved in beeswax.
