黃秋生曾這樣評(píng)價(jià)自己：“單親家庭，被父親遺棄，以父親為恥。中英混血然后家里好窮，哇，好精彩呀，我就差是個(gè)同性戀，就完美了！”
他把自己比作是一個(gè)不該存在的人，母親的意外懷孕有了自己，由于懷孕4個(gè)多月才發(fā)現(xiàn)懷有身孕，媽媽怕孩子不健康曾想把黃秋生流產(chǎn)掉，無(wú)奈肚子太大做手術(shù)的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)太高了。就這樣黃秋生來(lái)到了這個(gè)世間，他回憶自己的童年是不幸的，媽媽會(huì)將洗衣粉當(dāng)成奶粉喂給他吃，自己口吐白沫才報(bào)警。
黃秋生是私生子，在他四歲時(shí)父親拋棄他和相依為命的母親，離開香港移居澳大利亞，開始母子倆還斷斷續(xù)續(xù)和他通信保持聯(lián)絡(luò)，直到黃秋生12歲，他們終于和父親失去了所有聯(lián)絡(luò)。不久之后，和母親相依為命的黃秋生將Anthony Perry這個(gè)名字改為黃秋生，沿用至今。
但是他始終沒(méi)有放棄過(guò)尋找生父的努力，“我爸爸曾在信里說(shuō)，如果我是一個(gè)good boy（好孩子），他就會(huì)幫我搞定所有的事。”黃秋生回憶說(shuō)。所以他一直努力做個(gè)好男孩，后來(lái)又努力做個(gè)大明星，幻想著有一天父親能在銀幕上看到他，認(rèn)出他，回來(lái)尋找他和母親。
黃秋生從未放棄尋找自己的父親，幸運(yùn)的是在今年他在社交媒體上曬的和父親當(dāng)年的合影得到了回應(yīng)，只可惜命運(yùn)再次捉弄了黃秋生，父親已離世但卻找尋到了自己同父異母的雙胞胎哥哥。對(duì)于這個(gè)突如其來(lái)弟弟，大衛(wèi)和約翰表示在父親生時(shí)從未提及過(guò)自己還有一個(gè)家庭，對(duì)于發(fā)生的事情一無(wú)所知。他們也從來(lái)不知道父親原來(lái)還有這樣一個(gè)大秘密。
坎坷尋父45年，試圖拼湊出自己的家庭版圖，雖然未能與父親見(jiàn)到最后一面，但與兩個(gè)哥哥經(jīng)常來(lái)往也彌補(bǔ)了自己缺失的親情。
