1.at a pinch

At a pinch one could escape that way.

explanation: used to say that you could do something if ?necessary in a difficult or urgent situation

e.g. There's a space for three people. Four at a pinch.

2.soak

The two men were breathing hard, their feet and the bottom of their trousers were soaking wet.

explanation: to make sb/sth completely wet

e.g. A sudden shower of rain soaked the spectators.

3.merriment

In the evening we could try a bonfire - only there isn't much wood - and anyway they might just think it was song and dance and merriment.

explanation: literary laughter, fun, and enjoyment

e.g. Her eyes sparkled with merriment.

4.quietus

It looks as though Armstrong had got his quietus.

explanation: the death of a person; the end of something
