I'm going to read this book twice, when I have a child, I'll read it the third time.
Marva Collins is a great teacher who told us a lot, not only about how to teach a child but also the attitude towards life and work.
When a child arrived at Marva's school, the first thing Marva told him or her is "I won't let you fail". She believed in every child has the potential to succeed, wherever the child came from and whatever the state the child is in. Actually most of her children are labeled as "unteachable" and all kinds of problems. But she told them she will help them to succeed and she won't let them fail. She praise every child in her class, touch them, hug them, say she love them.
She is not just praise them, she has a tough love for them, every child need to learn and make progress. When a child is not doing well, Marva has her way to address the fault without attacking child's character.
I believe it's not only about children, but also about dealing with people all around you, your family, you colleges, your staff.
And it's not easy to make it, Marva made a lot of effort to make the school run, to make her children succeed. But people seem to make it sounds very easy, they thought Marva is "super teacher", a "magic worker". Marva refused that, she said she's just a normal woman, just a normal teacher.
She told every child that they can succeed, if anyone else in this world can. She build up the confidence in children that they can make it, and finally they made it.
