The policemen told Pippi in no uncertain terms to get the ladder and be quick about it, or she would soon get something she wasn't looking for. Pippi asked them reproachfully why they were so cross at her. She thought they were playing tag with her. The policemen asked her to put the ladder back so that they could get down, if she wanted to be a good girl. Pippi put the ladder back quickly and told the policemen they could drink coffee and have a good day with her. But the policemen were tricky, so just as they were down on the ground, they bounced to Pippi. Pippi told them she was too busy to play with them any longer. She lifted them up, walked over the garden and put them on the street. Then she rushed into the kitchen and took two cooky hearts. She asked them if they wanted to have a taste. Then she went back to Tommy and Annika, who stood there wide-eyed and just couldn't get over what they had seen. The policemen hurried back to the town and told the people that the girl didn't quite fit for an orphanage. Of course they didn't tell the people that they had been up on the roof. So the people thought it would be best to let Pippi remain in Villa Villekula, and if she wanted to go to school she could make the arrangement herself.
