Such a lot of troubles! I didn't hear the rising bell this morning, then I broke my shoestring while I was hurrying to dress and dropped my collar button down my neck. I was late for breakfast and also for first-hour recitation. I forgot to take any blotting paper and my fountain pen leaked. In trigonometry the Professor and I had a disagreement touching a little matter of logarithms. On looking it up, I find that she was right. We had mutton stew and pie-plant for lunch--hate 'em both; they taste like the asylum. The post brought me nothing but bills (though I must say that I never do get anything else; my family are not the kind that write).
倒霉的事接二連三地來(lái)臨！今天早晨，我沒(méi)聽(tīng)見(jiàn)起床鬧鈴，匆忙穿衣服時(shí)，又拉斷了鞋帶，還把領(lǐng)口的扣子拉掉在脖子里。早飯吃遲了，第一節(jié)誦讀課也遲到了，鋼筆漏水又沒(méi)帶吸墨紙。上三角函數(shù)課時(shí)，我和教授為了一個(gè)對(duì)數(shù)的小問(wèn)題起了爭(zhēng)執(zhí)。查書以后，我發(fā)覺(jué)還是她才是對(duì)的。中午吃燜羊肉和紅西芹，都是我不愛(ài)吃的，像極了孤兒院的伙食。郵差什么也沒(méi)送來(lái)，只有賬單（不過(guò)說(shuō)真的，除了賬單，我也沒(méi)收到過(guò)其他的東西，我的家人從來(lái)就不寫信）。
Did you ever hear of such a discouraging series of events? It isn't the big troubles in life that require character. Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh--I really think that requires SPIRIT.
您聽(tīng)說(shuō)過(guò)這么一大串令人喪氣的事嗎？生活中，并不只是在大難臨頭時(shí)才要表現(xiàn)出英雄本色。人要能勇于抗拒危險(xiǎn)，面對(duì)重大的沖擊，還要對(duì)日常的惱人事物一笑置之，我想這真的需要一點(diǎn)勇氣才行。
It's the kind of character that I am going to develop. I am going to pretend that all life is just a game which I must play as skillfully and fairly as I can. If I lose, I am going to shrug my shoulders and laugh--also if I win.
