An allee is a formal landscape element, commonly consisting of a straight path bounded by regularly spaced, large trees or tall shrubs. The symmetrical rows of trees are aligned on both sides of the thoroughfare and helped define the roadway space. Historically an allee has been understood as a rural thoroughfare free of fronting buildings, except at the terminus.
Allee were featured in many formal French Gardens and used as both promenades and extensions of the view. They ended in terminal landscape structures, such as a garden temples, or they extended to apparent infinity at the horizon.
A double allee refers to the even spacing of trees in two parallel rows, forming a leafy canopy over the pedestrian path.
